Emily Bronte’s Family
Emily Bronte was born into a family of six siblings in six years and was the fifth of the rest siblings. Emily and her siblings were Patrick Bronte and Maria Branwell Bronte’s children. Emily was born in the church building where her father was stationed in Thornton, Yorkshire. All six of the children were born prior to the family’s April 1820 relocation to the five room church building at Haworth on the Yorkshire moors, where the children would spend the majority of their lives. There, her father was given the lifelong position of perpetual curate, which allowed him to live in the church building with his family for as long as he carried out his duties.

Emily Bronte’s Schooling
The Clergy Daughters School at Cowan Bridge was where the three oldest Bronte sisters, Maria, Elizabeth, and Charlotte, went to school. When Emily, the youngest sister, was six years old in 1824, she joined them there.
Charlotte Bronte later wrote about the tough times they had at school in her book, “Jane Eyre.” Emily had it a bit easier than her sisters because she was the youngest, but the school was still a hard and mean place. A lot of kids got sick and died from typhoid fever there. Maria got very sick and had to go home, where she died in May. Then Elizabeth got sick, was sent home, and died on June 15. After losing his daughters, their father brought his other daughters home.

The siblings started making up tales about the world the wooden soldiers lived in after her brother Patrick received some of them as a gift in 1826. In terms of providing newspapers and poetry for the community they reportedly originally dubbed Glasstown, they wrote the stories in tiny script and put them in books small enough for the soldiers to read. In these stories, Emily and Anne played supporting roles. Emily and Anne established their own kingdom by 1830, and about 1833 they established a second one, Gondal.
Charlotte, the older sister, accepted a teaching position at Roe Head School in July 1835, and she brought Emily with her. Emily, who was extremely shy and enjoyed her freedom, disliked school. After only three months, she returned home, leaving her younger sister Anne to take her place. Emily kept to herself when she returned home, without Charlotte or Anne. The first poem we know she wrote was in 1836. Emily wrote about a fictional place called Gondal, but all of her stories and writings about it have been lost, with the exception of one instance in 1837 when Charlotte mentioned something Emily had written about it.
In September 1838, Emily put in her application for her own teaching position. She considered the work demanding because she had to work every day from almost 11 p.m. She was very sick when she went home after only six months. Rather, she remained at Haworth for an additional three years, managing the home, writing and reading, and playing the piano.

Emily Bronte’s Death
